Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner feels his team is paying the price for the club not investing over the summer, saying the chance to have a better season was thrown away.
The Eagles were 1-0 up at half-time thanks to a Jean-Phillipe Mateta penalty and looked comfortably the better side against a very underwhelming Red Devils side.
However, things turned round after the break as Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount scored twice and secured a 2-1 win for an improved United against a tiring Palace side.
Ruben Amorim’s men last played on Monday against Everton while the Eagles were away in Strasbourg in the Conference League on Thursday.
Palace have failed to win any of their games on the weekend after Thursday night European fixtures this season and the manager says that is due to failures in the transfer market.

‘I think it’s what we missed in summer, definitely,’ Glasner said on TNT Sports. ‘I never talked about it until now, but everything that happened was pretty clear.
‘If you play for the first time in your club’s history, European football, I think the right answer is invest and not save. We saved and that’s what we are facing.

‘This group of players give me everything every single day, but I think this group of players didn’t get the right support.
‘But I know we will stick together, we will work hard to change this. We’re still in very good positions but again, I think this was a chance to have an even better season, we threw away in summer.’
Crystal Palace did bring in some summer signings, with the likes of Yeremy Pino, Borna Sosa and Jaydee Canvot arriving, but only Pino has been a regular in the first team.
Eberechi Eze was sold to Arsenal for £60m and Glasner clearly feels that money and more should have been reinvested into the squad.

The manager’s contract at Crystal Palace expires at the end of this season, with his future in doubt as there will be plenty of suitors for him, given the impressive job he has done in south London.
On Sunday’s defeat, the Austrian with some of his team’s decision-making, but sympathised with the testing schedule they are dealing with.

‘Tough defeat, when you lose the game on two set-plays it makes it tough,’ he said. ‘We were not sharp enough, especially the second goal was terrible. I watched it back, it took us too long to get into the formation then three players from the wall ran out. I don’t know why we were doing this, but we did. That’s why we lost the game, in the end.
‘I have seen us, especially in the first half, better than Man United. Then in the second half, when you concede two quick goals then we can see the energy level is not top after the tight schedule that we have.
‘Again it feels not really deserved, it hurts and of course we know we should have done better in a few moments, but in the end we have to accept it.’
The Red Devils leapfrogged the Eagles with the win at Selhurst Park, climbing to seventh in the Premier League table, while Palace slipped to eighth.
