David Beckham sounds cautiously optimistic about the progress at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim, saying things are going int he right direction…slowly.

The Red Devils beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon, with second half goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount.

It came after a woeful defeat at home to Everton on Monday night and a slow start to the game against the Eagles.

Jean-Phillipe Mateta put Palace ahead from the penalty spot and the home side held a deserved lead at half-time before the visitors improved and the Eagles faded.

Manchester United legend Beckham has backed Amorim, although is not exactly getting over-excited about the progress under the Portuguese.

‘I think there’s signs of the manager turning things around,’ Beckham told Sky Sports.

‘He’s tweaked a few things and we are coming into a few better results but there’s still a long way to go and there’s still a few games that we’re not playing as we all like to see.

‘But I think we’ve got a good manager there and he’s changing things slowly.’

Amorim was pleased with the improvement from his side in the second half at Selhurst Park, admitting that they can’t play as they did in the first half in the Premier League.

‘I had the feeling – if you see the last plays of the [first] half they were struggling so much to take the ball out of the box and you can feel it in the way they move that they were getting tired,’ said the Red Devils boss.

‘We talk about that, our pace and intensity. We cannot play like that in the Premier League. So we increased that.

‘I had a feeling, we had the feeling, that if we scored one goal, this is going to change completely. I also really liked the way we controlled the game, with the ball, winning the game. We were in front, but we were not afraid of trying to score the next one and to control the ball in their half.’

On why they were lacking intensity in the first half, he added: ‘Sometimes, it’s a lot of things. The pace of the ball can be better. We need to understand that. All these small details, I think we improved. And when you have one or two plays, the rhythm flows better and you increase everything mentally and physically.’

Beckham was offering opinions while at the Qatar Grand Prix and also offered his take on England’s chances at the World Cup next summer under Thomas Tuchel.

‘I think Thomas has got a great squad of players and we’ve got a real opportunity going into this tournament,’ said the former Three Lions captain. ‘We’ve got a captain [Harry Kane] in unbelievable form, scoring the goals and leading by example.

‘Thomas has got a tough choice and tough decisions to make but that’s why he’s in the position he’s in. He’s done it a million times before and I’m sure he’ll pick the right players to win the tournament.’
