By Cole SullivanShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe college football world has been waiting all week for Lane Kiffin to decide whether he would remain at Ole Miss or depart for Baton Rouge to become the next head coach of the LSU Tigers.
On Sunday, Kiffin made his decision, accepting the LSU job and leaving Oxford just hours after being informed he would not be allowed to coach Ole Miss through their College Football Playoff run later this month.
“After a lot of prayer and time spent with family, I made the difficult decision to accept the head coaching position at LSU,” Kiffin wrote in a parting statement.
“I was hoping to complete a historic six-season run with this year's team by leading Ole Miss through the playoffs, capitalizing on the team's incredible success, and investing everything into a playoff run while protecting the program in any areas of concern. My request to do so was denied by Keith Carter, despite the team also asking for my continued leadership so they could maintain their high level of performance. Unfortunately, that means Friday's Egg Bowl was my last game coaching the Rebels."

On Monday, according to Wilson Alexander of Nola.com, it was revealed that Kiffin’s agreed-upon contract is a seven-year, $91 million deal, with several key details also made public.
He is set to earn $13 million annually, just shy of Kirby Smart’s $13.28 million at Georgia this season. However, if he wins a national title while in Baton Rouge, the contract includes an automatic escalator that would make him the highest-paid coach in the country.
Even before incentives, Kiffin, Smart, and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day are the only college football coaches making more than $12 million annually.
