Chip Kelly’s stint as the offensive coordinator of the Las Vegas Raiders lasted just 11 games before he was fired in a midseason shake-up that has put the team under a microscope for its dysfunctional locker room culture.

But Kelly may not be unemployed long.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, there’s speculation among some University of Kentucky football players that Kelly could potentially succeed Mark Stoops as head coach.

Stoops was fired on Sunday after a 5-7 season, capped off with a 41-0 beatdown at the hands of the Louisville Cardinals.

“Word is circulating among Kentucky players that Kelly could be the team’s next head coach,” Florio reported. “That doesn’t mean he will be. It doesn’t even mean he’s an official candidate. It means only that Kentucky players have somehow developed the impression that Kelly could be the new coach.”

Kelly had a successful run as head coach of the Oregon Ducks from 2009-2012, compiling a 46-7 record with three conference titles, two bowl wins, and an appearance in the BCS national championship game.

His second head-coaching stint wasn’t as successful with UCLA. Kelly went 35-34 in six seasons with the Bruins, making three bowls games and winning one.

He did parlay that job into an offensive coordinator position with Ohio State in 2024, which resulted in a national championship win that ultimately led him to the Raiders where he was the highest-paid assistant in the NFL.

Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein, Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline, and UNLV head coach Dan Mullen are among the rumored frontrunners for the Kentucky job, but it appears Kelly could potentially be as a dark-horse candidate.
