By Marni Rose McFallShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberA new update to Elon Musk’s X has revealed that a significant number of MAGA accounts are actually based outside of the U.S.
An account’s country of origin can now be seen in the user’s profile page. Now, the locations of popular MAGA accounts, known for promoting America First ideologies and sharing American political content, have been exposed to have originated from countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Newsweek has reached out to X outside of regular working hours via email for comment.
Why It Matters
Nikita Bier, head of product at X, shared in a post on November 22 that X was set to roll out a new feature, called About This Account, which will allow you "to see the country or region where an account is based." The location is visible via clicking on the sign-up date on an X profile.
Bier described the step as "an important first step to securing the integrity of the global town square" and said that they "plan to provide many more ways for users to verify the authenticity of the content they see on X."
It was noted in a follow-up post that there are a "few rough edges," and any incorrect data will be "updated periodically." But responses to the locations of different accounts, and subsequent concerns over the authenticity of content, have quickly flooded the platform.
What To Know
Accounts that identify as being MAGA and promote an America First Agenda have been identified as being based in countries including Chile, Nigeria, and Morocco.
Newsweek has compiled a list of said accounts below.
American Patriot
The account @ColdWarPatriot, which has over 140,000 followers on X, whose bio reads "USAF Veteran-Nuclear-Ronald Reagan-JFKjr#20—DJT#19-Constitutionalist-#1776-#2ndAmendment," has a listed location of Chile.
...America First
@AmericaFirst0, which has over 60,000 followers on X and whose bio reads "Make America Great Again," has a listed location of Bangladesh.

Maga Nadine
The account @femalebodybuil6, which states in their bio that they are an "Immigrant in the USA," that they are a "Trump Lover," and has the #MAGA in their bio, and has over 390,000 followers on the platform, has a listed location of Morocco.
MAGA Nation
The account @MAGANation X, whose bio reads Standing strong with President Trump | America First | Patriot Voice for We The People," and has over 390,000 followers on the platform, has a listed location of being in a part of Eastern Europe which is not in the European Union.

MAGA & World
The account @MAGAWorld4896, which has over 3,000 followers, is based in East Asia and the Pacific. That account states in its bio that it is "Overseas MAGA," and has a cover photo of an American flag.

MAGA
The account @MAGA100X, which has over 1000 followers on the platform, has a listed location of Germany.
Some MAGA accounts have swiftly deleted their profiles after having been identified as being outside of the U.S.
The account @1776General, who has over 140,000 followers on X was identified as being based in Turkey, but posted a picture of a U.S. passport and said that they are in Turkey for work.
It is worth noting that many high-profile MAGA accounts, like @MAGAVoice, @EndWokeness, and @LibsofTikTok are all based in the U.S.
There has not been significant discourse about left-wing U.S accounts posting from outside of the country, but it is worth noting that many left, liberal, or Democrat voices have left X in recent years, in opposition to Musk.
Locations being revealed has sparked discourse across the platform and led to some misinformation, including the claim that the account for the Department of Homeland Security was based outside the U.S., which was quickly debunked by Bier and DHS.
What People Are Saying
The Department of Homeland Security in a post on X viewed over 11 million times: "I can’t believe we have to say this, but this account has only ever been run and operated from the United States. Screenshots are easy to forge, videos are easy to manipulate. Thank you for your attention to this matter."
Harry Sisson, a Democrat, in a post on X viewed 1 million times: "This is easily one of the greatest days on this platform. Seeing all of these MAGA accounts get exposed as foreign actors trying to destroy the United States is a complete vindication of Democrats, like myself and many on here, who have been warning about this."
@micah_erfan, a law student and policy adviser, in a post on X viewed over 1 million times: "Democrats have rung the alarm bell about foreign psyops for almost a decade now. We were laughed at, smeared, called hysterical. But now it's undeniable. MAGA is, and always has been, a foreign backed operation to destabilize, divide, and eventually destroy the United States."
The account @AntiTrumpCanada, in a post on X, viewed over 1 million times: "Good morning to all the MAGA patriots working overtime in Nigeria, India, Kenya, Pakistan, Russia and Bangladesh. Nothing says "America First" like tweeting from six different continents."
Nikita Bier, head of product on X, in a post following the rollout of the country of origin feature, viewed 1.6 million times: "I need a drink."
What’s Next
Bier wrote in a post on X that the "edges" with the rollout will "be resolved by Tuesday.
