By Alyce CollinsShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberDoor cam footage showing the unfortunate moment a man got locked out of his home without his phone or keys has gone viral online.
The hilarious footage was shared on TikTok by Amy, 26, (@amysueee) showing the heart stopping moment her boyfriend Liam realized he was locked out—and he didn’t have anything with him. Indeed, Liam, 26, had only gone outside to let their dogs roam the back yard briefly before leaving for work, until the door shut him out there too.
Amy, from Melbourne, Australia, told Newsweek that the sliding door is “a bit faulty” and when it’s closed, it can sometimes automatically lock. As a result, Liam was left struggling for ideas and did the only thing he could think of – trying to get Amy’s attention through the door cam.
“Liam was letting our dogs out for a last toilet break before he left for work,” Amy said. “But if you close the sliding door too hard, the handle can drop and lock itself. This time he only closed it softly, and somehow it still nudged the latch just enough to lock him out.
...“He suddenly realized he had no phone, no keys, and he was meant to be leaving for work, so he absolutely panicked. I was already at work and had no idea this was happening.”
Liam was stuck outside for around 15 minutes as he tried everything to get back inside, all the while trying to get Amy’s attention on the camera. He hoped that by waving and talking to the camera, Amy would receive notifications alerting her to movement.
Nonetheless, she didn’t see the footage until later that day, and it was certainly entertaining to say the least. She was “crying laughing” when she watched it back and couldn’t resist sharing it on social media.
In just a matter of days the video has gone viral, leading to more than 6.4 million views and over 709,500 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. Amy joked that she didn’t know what Liam was expecting her to do through the door camera, perhaps nothing more than just “a wave back.”
She continued: “He looked so dramatic waving at the camera, like he was stranded and signaling for rescue. I was already at work, so I didn’t see anything live, I only saw it afterwards.”
Thankfully, Liam managed to resolve the situation himself by nudging the door and getting the lock to open. It hadn’t locked completely, so by hitting the glass door a few times, he managed to shift the handle back up.
He made it to work in the end, and to his amazement, he was still on time.
The couple has been blown away by the online response to the footage, as they never imagined it would capture so much attention. Amy can’t get enough of the amusing comments from people joking that they too have been in a similar situation.
“This has actually happened before,” Amy said. “The first time, I was at work too, and I kept getting Ring notifications. I ended up speaking to him through the app while he was stuck outside. So now it’s becoming a bit of a recurring issue with that door.”
While it may not be the first time this has happened, Liam is undoubtedly hoping it’s the last. Amy told Newsweek that her boyfriend “double checks everything now” before he leaves the house, and she monitors the Ring door cam app more vigilantly.
Many internet users have taken to the comments to share how obsessed they are with the door cam footage, leading to over 5,100 comments on the TikTok post already.
One comment reads: “What was he expecting you to do [though]? Unlock the door telepathically.”
Another TikTok user wrote: “Need an update. Is he still outside frantically saying Amy?”
Another person jested: “I could be wrong, but I think he’s trying to get [your] attention Amy.”
