Fans weren’t happy he was nominated at The Game Awards after he spent just four hours working on the hit title

Charlie Cox has responded to the backlash around his Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Best Performance nomination at The Game Awards 2025.

AdvertisementLast week, Charlie Cox was nominated at The Game Awards for Best Performance in recognition of his portrayal of Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the leader of a rag-tag expedition to defeat the murderous Paintress and provide safety for the remaining citizens of Lumière.
However some fans weren’t happy with the nomination after Cox revealed he only spent one four-hour session recording his lines. “I’m not a gamer [and] I haven’t played it. People keep saying how amazing it is and congratulations but I feel like a total fraud,” he revealed earlier this year.

Fellow Best Performance nominee Troy Baker previously told NME that playing Indiana Jones in The Great Circle almost “broke” him while Konatsu Kato said she spent so long in the world of Silent Hill f for Hinako Shimizu she “felt my own sanity slipping”.
Responding to a fan at a recent convention about The Game Awards 2025, Cox said: “I’m thrilled for this nomination, I’ve said this before and I think it’s important to say [again] – there’s an amazing French actor called Maxence Cazorla who did almost all of the motion capture for that role.”
Recommended“Any nomination or credit I get, I really have to give to him because I believe the performance of that character is really down to him,” he continued. “My voice was just part of that process.”

Cazorla also did the motion capture for Verso (a character voiced by Ben Starr, who was also nominated for Best Performance at The Game Awards) and voiced Esquire in both English and French. “That’s a crazy amount of heavy lifting that goes under the radar,” wrote one fan.
“Charlie Cox is a super humble and likable dude. His voice performance is amazing and deserves all the praise it’s getting. But Maxence also did incredible work and I’m glad Charlie is pointing that out,” said another. “I’m glad that voice actors have gotten a bigger spotlight over the years, and I look forward to the motion capture performers getting the same recognition. Stand-up of Charlie to give a public shout-out to Maxence,” added a third.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed a live-action adaptation of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is in the works. Hollywood star Glen Powell has said he’s “very interested” in being involved. Meanwhile an orchestral tour of the game’s incredible soundtrack is also planned for 2026.
