The New York Mets on Sunday reportedly agreed to trade Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Marcus Semien. However, he may not be the only player from the Mets' core to be playing elsewhere next season.
Edwin Díaz and Pete Alonso both opted out of their contracts this offseason. USA Today's Jesse Yomtov predicted that Díaz would leave the Mets in free agency.
"There was consensus on Diaz's last nine-figure contract but he's three years older now and chasing another deal in the $85-105 million range," wrote Yomtov. "David Stearns would surely love to reinvest in multiple relievers as the Mets pick up the pieces following a disaster finish."
...Díaz reportedly wants to sign another $100 million deal and is willing to leave the Mets to make it happen. However, even if he cannot get a $100 million deal, he may simply sign with the highest bidder this offseason.
"Just get the best deal for my family. ... I love New York," Díaz told Newsday's Laura Albanese earlier this month when asked about his free agency desires. "I would love to stay in New York, but if I have to go another place, I would be happy. I want to win a ring, so wherever I go, I want to win a ring and enjoy the time."
Contenders should be lining up to make Díaz an offer. He is a three-time All-Star and has been named Reliever of the Year three times. He had a 1.63 ERA last season and recorded 28 saves. He wants to win, but would he be willing to sign a deal that does not guarantee him the closer duties?
