By Aaliyan MohammedShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe Toronto Blue Jays almost won the World Series this past season, but Bo Bichette is now a free agent. He was a major part of the Blue Jays' success, but bringing him back will not be simple.
Not only will Bichette be expensive, but there are concerns about his defense. He has a minus-33 outs above average at shortstop since making his debut. He is one of the worst defensive shortstops in baseball, but his bat is worth keeping around. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter predicted the Blue Jays would re-sign Bichette, but move him to second base.
"If the Blue Jays do end up re-signing Bo Bichette, they will need to figure out the best way to utilize Ernie Clement and Addison Barger who are both coming off breakout performances in 2025," wrote Reuter.
...Bichette has led the American League in hits twice in his career and is a two-time All-Star. He struggled in 2024, but bounced back last season. He slashed .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs in 139 games last season. Before a knee injury at the end of the year, he had a chance to lead all of baseball in hits.
Bichette has made it known he wants to stay in Toronto and continue to play alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr. However, keeping him at shortstop could be costly for the Blue Jays.
