Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has called out Mohamed Salah for shirking responsibility amid a nightmare run for the club.

The Premier League champions were beaten 3-0 by Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday, making it six defeats in seven top flight matches.

The chances of successfully defending their title now look extremely distant as Arne Slot’s side sit 11th in the division, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal.

It is a stunning drop off after the Reds comfortably won the Premier League in Slot’s first season in charge.

They than began this campaign with five straight victories, but things have gone spectacularly wrong since then.

Carragher is not sure what the answer is to fix this poor form, but wants to see more from the likes of Salah in terms of fronting up to the problems.

The former Liverpool defender feels club captain Virgil van Dijk is consistently dealing with the press, while Salah is only heard from when it suits him.

‘I don’t know and nobody knows,’ Carragher told Sky Sports of what has gone wrong with Liverpool. ‘The manager sees the players every day and he can’t quite fix it at the moment. We’re talking about a manager who’s won the Premier League.

‘I think Virgil van Dijk after the game [against Nottingham Forest] has come out again and spoke as he should do as a captain. He’s called Liverpool a mess.

‘I must say on the back of all these Liverpool defeats, it’s always Virgil van Dijk who comes out, and as I said the captain should do that but there should be other players in that dressing room coming out and speaking for the club.

‘A year ago this weekend Mo Salah wasn’t shy in coming out and speaking about his own situation, about the club not offering him a contract.

‘I only every hear Salah speak when he gets Man of the Match, or he needs a new contract. I’d like to see Mo Salah come out as one of the leaders, one of the legends of Liverpool, come out and speak for the team. It shouldn’t always be the captain.’

Carragher is referring to Salah speaking out on his contract situation last November, claiming he was ‘more out than in’ as his deal was expiring at the end of the season and there was no movement on a new contract.

‘We are almost in December and I haven’t received an offer to stay at the club yet so I am probably more out than in,’ Salah said after a win over Southampton.

‘I have been at the club for many years. There is no club like this but in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.’

He added: ‘Of course, yes [I am disappointed].

‘I’m not going to retire soon. I’m focusing on the season and I’m trying to win the Premier League and hopefully the Champions League as well. I’m disappointed but we will see.’

Salah eventually did sign a new deal with the club, but his form has been notably worse this season compared to his spectacular performances of the last campaign.

Van Dijk’s assessment of his team after the shock thrashing at the hands of Nottingham Forest was damning.

‘We had a great three or four days’ preparation but in a game you are dealing with facts and the facts are we conceded a set piece in the first half and a terrible goal at the start of the second half,’ said Van Dijk.

‘We are definitely letting him [Slot] down, but we’ve let ourselves down as well. You look at yourself first and then you help each other, you help each other get out of this mess because at the moment it is a mess – that’s just a fact.

‘As the champions we can’t be in the situation we are in right now. What are we going to do about it? We’re going to try to turn it around and that’s the mentality everyone should have.’

The Reds are back in action at home to PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday night before travelling to West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday.
