By Adeola Adeosun and Gabe WhisnantShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberPresident Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order directing top officials to consider whether certain chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood should be designated as foreign terrorist organizations and sanctioned as global terrorists.
The order instructs the secretaries of State and Treasury, in consultation with the attorney general and the director of national intelligence, to report on possible designations of chapters in countries such as Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan and to act within 45 days if such labels are warranted.
The administration says the move is part of a broader effort to counter extremist networks it accuses of fueling instability and supporting attacks on U.S. partners in the Middle East.
Last week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott designated both the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as foreign terrorist organizations and transnational criminal organizations in a proclamation. CAIR has filed a lawsuit challenging the Texas move, saying it violates the U.S. Constitution and state law.
