The Philadelphia Phillies know this offseason is going to be one of the most important in recent history.
In addition to bolstering the bullpen, Dave Dombrowski must retool the roster in an effort to avoid trotting out a very similar roster to the previous two seasons that have finished as disappointments. The free agency class this winter has plenty of depth to make it possible, but Philadelphia has its work cut out to make significant alterations.
One area that stands out as a possibility to upgrade is third base. While Alec Bohm is solid defensively, his bat has been questionable at times for the Phillies. That is why David Schoenfield believes the team needs to pursue Alex Bregman this winter.
..."The Phillies have basically run the same team out there the past three seasons, and it has worked! Only the Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers have more wins since 2023," Schoenfield wrote for ESPN. "But Philadelphia also hasn't reached a World Series in that time, and the offense hit .199 over the past two postseasons. With that in mind, it's time for the Phillies to change things and get some new blood in the clubhouse -- and Bregman brings not only a history of winning, but the attitude to reenergize things a bit."
Schoenfield wasn't done there with his plea to Dombrowski to sign Bregman.
"Signing him also makes sense for the Phillies on the field," he added. "Alec Bohm hasn't been a good postseason hitter, with just two home runs and 14 RBIs in 38 career playoff games. He was the cleanup hitter in the NLDS against the Dodgers, despite hitting just 11 home runs in the regular season. Bregman would replace Bohm at third base and give the Phillies a more impactful hitter at the top of the lineup. If they re-sign (Kyle) Schwarber, Bregman could either hit third between Schwarber and Bryce Harper or move into the cleanup spot."
Under the premise that the Phillies would also bring back Schwarber, having him in the lineup along with Bregman and Harper would give Philadelphia one of the game's best slugging trios. It would make pitching around any one of them a nightmare as manager Rob Thomson would have another elite hitter ready to go.
If Dombrowski can make it work by adding Bregman, bringing back Schwarber and filling the other holes in the roster, he may be the most popular man in Philadelphia because it would make the Phillies one of the favorites on paper to win the World Series next year.
