By Zach PressnellShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe New York Yankees swung a big trade with the Milwaukee Brewers to acquire Devin Williams last offseason. It looked like a steal at the time, but Williams struggled for the Bronx Bombers this season.
Now, he's a free agent, and The Athletic's Jim Bowden projected Williams to sign a one-year, $10 million deal.
Bleacher Report's Erik Beaston recently predicted the Yankees would be the team to sign Williams in free agency this offseason.
..."Any one of those teams could end up with the former Brewer, but the Yankees have the inside track, one of the best players in the world, Aaron Judge, and a solid chance of returning to the postseason in 2026," Beaston wrote. "That should be enough to lure him back to the most storied franchise in the game. Spotrac estimates his market value at one year, $5.7 million, making him an affordable option for whichever team does convince him to put pen to paper."
Williams could fit with the Yankees if he's willing to return to the Bronx after a disastrous season.
The Yankees faithful didn't seem to love Williams and his inconsistency this season, so it feels unlikely that he returns, but the Yankees have the money to sign him. He would fit their payroll perfectly, so it's hard to rule the idea out.
If Williams can return to his old form, this would be a dream come true for the Yankees.
