Manchester United have ‘intensified talks’ to sign Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes in January with growing optimism a deal will be completed next month.
After strengthening their attack last summer, United have made rebuilding their midfield their next priority in the transfer window.
Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson has emerged as a top target for the club who are also still admirers of Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is another target.
Neither of those three are likely to be a viable target in January however with United already looking to alternative options to get them through to the end of the season.
United have been credited with firm interest in Wolves star Gomes with reports in the midfielder’s homeland now claiming talks are edging towards an advanced stage.

A fee of around €50million (£44m) is currently being negotiated between the two clubs with growing optimism among all parties a deal will be completed before the end of the year, Globo Esporte report.
It is the second time United have done business with Wolves this year having signed Matheus Cunha from Molineux in the summer after activating his release clause.

Gomes joined Wolves in January 2023 for a fee of £15m.
United’s options in the middle of the park are short with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes serving as Amorim’s first-choice this season.
Casemiro has enjoyed a fine campaign but the 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season.
Manuel Ugarte, a £50m signing from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024, has been limited to a bench role this season, failing to impress on the occasions when he has come onto replace the Brazil international.

Ugarte played under Amorim at Sporting CP but has shown little sign of replicating the form he showed in Portugal with his manager admitting he is ‘struggling’.

‘You can sense that a lot of very good players come here, and sometimes they struggle, and they are struggling, he is struggling in the moment,’ Amorim said.
‘But it is our job to try to help our players, and again, everything can change, and you saw it five weeks ago, the environment (at the club) was completely different.
‘So I know that Ugarte is struggling in the moment, and my job is trying to help him to feel as a player, like I felt when he was a Sporting player, for example, but it is a different world, and he needs to adapt, and he needs to improve, especially in training.’
