By Alyce CollinsShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberWith the holiday season nearly upon us, a video of Kamala Harris’ advice for preparing Thanksgiving dinner has resurfaced.
The video was originally captured in 2019 by journalist and political commentator Jonathan Capehart. During a break between her televised interviews on MSNBC, Capehart asked Harris whether a wet or dry brine was better for the turkey, as his husband Nick Schmit was eager to get her take.
Six years later, the footage has resurfaced as Capehart shared it on social media (@capehartj on Instagram and Threads) on November 24. Internet users can’t get enough of the former vice president’s cooking tips, leading to more than 92,500 views and 4,900 likes on the Instagram post in a matter of hours.
When asked for her advice for doing a wet or dry brine on the turkey, Harris didn’t hesitate to lend her culinary knowledge. During the video, she addressed Schmit directly and suggested doing a brine for 24 to 48 hours, noting that the latter is best.
...For a wet brine, her advice is to get “a pot of water, couple bay leaves, a little sugar, couple peppercorns, you could even do a little slice of orange.”
Alternatively, a dry brine “is easier,” according to Harris, who was the senator for California at the time. She recommends salt and pepper all over the outside of the turkey, then “chop up a little thyme” and rosemary and mix that with butter to place under the skin before cooking. Her Thanksgiving recipe also includes a “cheap bottle of white wine” to baste the meat.
Harris repeatedly pauses throughout the clip or stops mid-sentence to respond to the person speaking in her earpiece. At one point she fluidly repeats to Capehart that they’re “one minute out” from going live.

At the end, she turns to the camera effortlessly and says “yes, hi” without pause.
Harris launched her first presidential campaign in January 2019 before dropping out of the race in December of that year. She would eventually go on to join Joe Biden’s ticket as his vice president from 2021 to 2025.
The video often gets reposted this time of year, as internet users hail her undeniable love of cooking. After Capehart shared the clip again this week, many social media users have taken to the comments to react to the viral recipe.
One comment on Capehart’s Threads post reads: “I look forward to this clip every Thanksgiving.”
Another Threads user wrote: “A sign that someone loves to cook is that they give you options on how to make something.”
Another person replied: “She really just took her time to do this for this man. Just a class act.”
While one Instagram user said: “OK, I want her to do recipes now. I find it relaxing.”
