By Anna CommanderShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberPresident Donald Trump's approval rating has slipped to a new second-term low, a poll from The Economist and YouGov shows on Tuesday.
Newsweek reached out to political analysts via email for additional comment.
Why It Matters
The approval rating of President Trump sinking to its lowest point of his second term, potentially highlights continued public concern over economic issues, government performance, and controversy surrounding the release of Jeffrey Epstein files.
Presidential approval ratings serve as a key barometer for the mood of the nation, reflecting how Americans perceive the administration's response to economic challenges and political scandals leading up to the 2026 midterm elections.
What To Know
According to the poll, Trump's approval slipped to 38 percent and his disapproval rating is 57 percent.
The poll surveyed 1,677 U.S. adults from November 21 to November 24 and has a margin of error of 3.4 percent.
In an email to Newsweek regarding the poll, YouGov's Allen Houston also noted Trump's overall approval slipping amid his second term in office: "Donald Trump has hit a new low in job approval for his second term, with women and older Americans hitting new record levels of disapproval in the November 21 - 24, 2025 Economist / YouGov Poll."
Houston added, "The 38% who approve of Trump is the smallest share of Americans to do so at any point in Trump's second term."
The poll also asked U.S. adults if they approve or disapprove of the way Trump is handling the investigation into late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The survey shows that 28 percent approve and 55 percent disapprove, while 18 percent have no opinion.
What People Are Saying
CNN Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten on X earlier this month: "Nobody is buying what Trump is selling on Epstein. His net approval on it is an absolutely dreadful -39 pts... Far worse than any other major issue. It isn't improving over time. Even among the GOP, just 45% (!) approve of the job the Trump admin is doing on the Epstein case."
CBS News Poll on X earlier this week: "Pres. Trump’s overall approval rating has been declining incrementally over recent months and now 40% of Americans approve of the job he is doing as president - a low point for his second term in our poll."
What Happens Next
Pervasive economic dissatisfaction and disapproval among core demographic groups—including women and older Americans—could shape the strategies of both major parties approaching the 2026 midterm elections. If President Trump’s approval remains at historic lows, Republican candidates may face additional headwinds in battleground districts.
In Congress, bipartisan momentum on transparency measures concerning the Epstein files may continue, especially after the House overwhelmingly passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act and Trump later signed the bill.
