A powerful earthquake of 6.6 magnitude struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Thursday , the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The Indonesia Tsunami Warning Center said there was no potential for a tsunami.

The quake struck at a depth of 16 miles, the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
