By Hugh CameronShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberCampbell’s has fired an executive who was recorded calling the soup company’s products “highly processed” and for “poor people,” and made racist comments about Indian employees.
The company confirmed on Wednesday that Martin Bally, vice president of information technology, was “no longer employed by the company,” after determining that the voice in the recording was his.
...“The comments were vulgar, offensive and false, and we apologize for the hurt they have caused,” Campbell’s wrote in a statement. “This behavior does not reflect our values and the culture of our company, and we will not tolerate that kind of language under any circumstances.”
“We are proud of the food we make, the people who make it and the high-quality ingredients we use to provide consumers with good food at a good value,” the statement continued. “The comments heard on the recording about our food are not only inaccurate—they are patently absurd.”
The termination follows a lawsuit filed against Campbell's by former employee Robert Garza. Bally made the comments during an interaction with Garza in 2024, the lawsuit states, in which he also allegedly called Indian employees “idiots.”
This is a developing story. More to come.
