The Boston Red Sox added to their starting rotation by trading for Sonny Gray, and the Toronto Blue Jays reportedly added Dylan Cease in free agency on Wednesday night.
As a result, the Yankees can't afford to lose star outfielder Cody Bellinger in free agency.
Zach Mentz of Cleveland.com recently projected Bellinger would sign a monster six-year, $162 million deal this offseason, which should fit the Yankees' payroll.
..."Bellinger is a former MVP who, while no longer playing at that level, is still a proven middle-of-the-order hitter," Mentz wrote. "He also plays stellar defense at all three outfield positions and first base. He’ll likely be Plan B for whichever teams don’t win the Kyle Tucker Sweepstakes."
Bellinger is one of the best position players on the market this offseason, so it's realistic for him to land well above $20 million a year.
With the Red Sox and Blue Jays adding to their rosters already, the Yankees can't afford to whiff on Bellinger. It might cost the Bronx Bombers nearly $200 million, but it should be well worth it if the star outfielder can continue to play at the level he did this season.
