Right before Thanksgiving, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc.—a supermarket chain with 114 stores along the East Coast of America—has voluntarily recalled all lots of Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese, sold at Wegmans stores between November 14 and 24, due to a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
Why It Matters
Cheese—especially specialty varieties such as Pecorino Romano—is often purchased over holidays, including Thanksgiving. Because this recall spans mid-November, it overlaps with Thanksgiving shopping, so the potential impact on households could be huge if the contaminated cheese was consumed.
Listeria can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections, especially among high-risk populations such as young children, elderly individuals, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.
Healthy, less vulnerable people may experience mild, short-term symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. When there is even the slightest hint of a public health problem, companies are quick to act.
Earlier this month, Newsweek published a map which shows the spread of cases possibly related to the Listeria outbreak linked to a small selection of pasta products, which resulted in 27 confirmed illnesses and six deaths across 18 states as of the end of October 2025. And in August, Ohio-based Middlefield Original Cheese Company issued a voluntary recall for various cheese products due to potential contamination.
What To Know
According to a company announcement, which was also announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Wegmans initiated the recall after being notified by its supplier of the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes in its Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese.
The recalled cheese was sold at Wegmans stores across several U.S. states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., between November 14 and November 24, 2025.
The recalled cheese was packaged in plastic tubs and labeled with a UPC starting with 2-77580-XXXXX-7, where the “XXXXX” varies depending on the weight of the container.
According to the FDA announcement, all lot codes have been removed from store shelves, and no illnesses linked to the cheese have been reported so far, as of the recall announcement date.
What People Are Saying
The FDA announcement says: "Wegmans Food Markets is recalling Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese with Wegmans’ scale labels due to the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems."
On its website, Wegman’s says: "For customers with questions, please contact Wegmans Food Markets at 1-855-934-3663 daily from 8:00 AM through 7:00 PM EST."
What Happens Next
Wegmans has advised all customers who purchased any of the recalled Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese products to return them to the store for a full refund or to call Wegmans’ customer support line for further information. The FDA continues to update and monitor the recall on its official website.
