The New York Mets had quite a disappointing season this year, but closer Edwin Diaz was one of the few bright spots on the roster.

Diaz was a superstar in 2022 but missed the 2023 season with an injury. He struggled last year before bouncing bouncing back in a huge way this season. As a result, it seems like the star closer could earn a monumental contract in free agency this winter, and the Mets need to make sure it's with them.

Zach Mentz of Cleveland.com recently projected Diaz would sign a huge four-year, $92 million deal in free agency. The Mets are seemingly one of the only teams in baseball that would be willing to give a closer this much money.

"Díaz is the best free agent relief pitcher available, bar none," Mentz wrote. "The three-time All-Star is sure to be highly sought after, likely by his former Mets or another high-spending team that could use relief help like the Los Angeles Dodgers."

The Mets could have some competition at this price, though.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees are a pair of teams with deep pockets and a dire need for a closer.

Still, the Mets should be looked at as the favorites in the Diaz sweepstakes. They need to do everything in their power to bring him back to Queens, or the team could be watching the postseason from home again next year.
