By Brendan ColeShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberPresident Donald Trump has said the United States is preparing to take new action against alleged drug trafficking networks in Venezuela, with strikes on land set to start "very soon."
Speaking to U.S. military service members on Thursday, Trump praised the recent actions "to deter Venezuelan drug traffickers," involving strikes against boats allegedly carrying narcotics, and a significant military build-up in the Caribbean.
U.S. troops have carried out at least 21 strikes on alleged drug boats since September, killing at least 83 people, according to Reuters.
But Trump hinted at more direct action against Venezuela on Thursday. He said his campaign had hampered the drug trade by sea, "and we’ll be starting to stop them by land also," adding: "the land is easier, but that’s going to start very soon."
Newsweek has contacted the Venezuelan foreign ministry for comment.
