By Jenna Sundel and Peter AitkenShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberLocal law enforcement in Washington, D.C., will join National Guard members on patrols around the nation's capital after an attack on two Guard members killed one and left the other in critical condition earlier this week, The Washington Post reported.
West Virginia National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe were shot on Wednesday, with both members alive when an email - obtained and reviewed by The Washington Post - was sent out to D.C. police leadership.
Beckstrom then passed away from her wounds on Thursday evening despite receiving surgery, and Wolfe is "fighting for his life," according to President Donald Trump.
Two police officials spoke anonymously with the outlet regarding the plan, which at this time is only a temporary measure to boost safety. The email said that officers "will conduct high-visibility patrols with the National Guard and provide assistance as needed," but noted that the situation is "fluid" and adjustments to the staffing plan could change in the coming days.
