Detroit saw its franchise-record-tying 13-game winning streak end on Wednesday night with a 117-114 road loss to the Boston Celtics, dropping the Pistons to 2-1 in East Group B play in the NBA Cup. Jalen Duren tied the game with two free throws with 1:55 remaining, but Duren’s turnover prevented Detroit from getting a final shot away. Cade Cunningham went for 42 points in the loss, with Duren adding 12 points and 16 rebounds. Tobias Harris also scored 12 points for the cold-shooting Pistons, who hit just 39.8% on the night.
The Magic improved to 3-0 in East Group B on Tuesday night with a 144-103 road rout of the Philadelphia 76ers. Anthony Black came off the bench for a career-high 31 points, with 27 coming in the first half as Orlando built an 86-60 lead. Franz Wagner tossed in 21 points, and Desmond Bane added 15 while Jalen Suggs booked 11 assists in just 16 minutes before being ejected late in the first half. Suggs earned two technical fouls in a heated altercation with 27 seconds left before halftime.
Paolo Banchero (groin) will miss his eighth straight game for Orlando. The winner of Friday’s game wins the group and advances to the NBA Cup quarterfinals on Dec. 9 or 10, while the loser remains in play for the East’s wild-card spot. Cunningham leads the Pistons with averages of 28.1 points and 9.3 assists, with Duren getting 19.8 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. Wagner is the Magic’s top scorer with an average of 22.9 points. Bane scores 17.3 points per game, Suggs gets 13.6 points and 5.1 assists a night, and Wendell Carter Jr. posts 12.3 points and 7.4 rebounds a night.
