Jasmin Llamas, 33, had just found out she was expecting baby number two when she became unwell. She was around four weeks pregnant at the time, and she suddenly couldn’t keep anything down.
For many days, Llamas, of California, experienced extreme nausea, fatigue, and couldn’t stop shaking. She told Newsweek that she thought she had “stomach flu or food poisoning,” and even water proved to be a trigger.
“It had been about three days of not being able to hold any food or liquids down, so I decided to head to the emergency room,” Llamas said. “I was so weak, I couldn’t stand or stop shaking.”
...Llamas was hoping to be given IV fluids and medication before being sent home. She was offered an ultrasound scan, but as she had one scheduled the following week, she didn’t feel it was necessary.
However, Llamas was told that it’s standard procedure and the doctor wanted her to get one.
“When I was laying there getting the ultrasound, I felt like it took a while, so I casually joked that they were taking a lot of pictures and asked how many were in there. The ultrasound tech just said they weren’t allowed to go over them, but the doctor would review the scan instead. I thought that was strange but didn’t think too much of it,” Llamas continued.
As she needed a second bag of IV fluids, Llamas encouraged her partner, Ryan, to head back to work since she’d be there a while longer. Shortly after, doctors gave Llamas the surprise of a lifetime by announcing that she’s actually expecting twins.
“Never in a million years did I think there could be more than one,” she told Newsweek.
When her husband returned, Llamas asked the doctor to tell him the big news because she knew he wouldn’t believe it either.
The couple, who already have a 3-year-old son, can’t wait to become a family of five this December.
Llamas shared a hilarious video on TikTok (@jasmiiinnn__) about how she thought it was just a simple stomach bug, only to find out she’s expecting twins. The clip has stunned the internet, going viral with over 419,900 views and more than 5,500 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.
Through the good and the bad, Llamas has continued documenting much of her pregnancy on social media. It has certainly had its challenges, as she was diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum early on, extreme nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.
She previously had no idea what hyperemesis gravidarum was, but now she shares her experience to help other women feel less isolated.
Llamas said: “Hyperemesis gravidarum truly takes the joy and excitement out of pregnancy because I just felt sick or weak the entire time. It made it difficult to just get out of bed or do day-to-day activities with my son.
“I used to think it was typical morning sickness, but I was wrong. I went days without being able to hold anything down and I began to rapidly lose weight. I was basically bed bound because I was so weak. The first few months were definitely a dark time, and I truly felt like I wasn’t going to see the end of this pregnancy.”
Social media often glamorizes pregnancy, but Llamas didn’t want to shy away from the complications. She’s connected with countless other moms who also experienced hyperemesis gravidarum and hopes to be a positive source for others.
Since the clip went viral on TikTok, many internet users took to the comments to share the amusing ways they learned their stomach bugs were actually pregnancies too.
One comment reads: “My food poisoning turned 8 a couple weeks ago.”
While another person replied: “I had my appendix removed at 15 weeks of my flu. She’s almost 14 now.”
