There are plenty of deeply discounted robot vacuums during Black Friday, but my picks are all-in-one options that vacuum, mop and self-clean – prices from just AU$426.

Want a new robot vacuum but not sure which one to buy? I don't blame you – there are just so many models out there that even I'm overwhelmed... and I test robovacs for a living! The newest models are often so similar to each other that it truly is difficult to tell which one deserves your hard-earned money.

Now, I can understand that it might be tempting to go down the affordable route, but if your budget is just a couple of hundred bucks, I'd be hard pressed to recommend a worthwhile option. That's because cheap isn't always the best: you won't get enough suction and if it isn't versatile, it's not good value for money.

With prices from just AU$429, I'm only recommending models that will do most of the hard work for you – meaning, they'll vacuum, mop and then clean themselves too. All you have to do is regularly empty the dirty-water tank so it doesn't grow its own ecosystem, and refill the clean water. Oh, and once every couple of months, just replace the dust bag.

Eufy X10 Pro OmniEditor's choiceSave 41% (AU$700.95)Eufy X10 Pro Omni: was AU$1,699.95 now AU$999 at Amazon

This robot vacuum may not have the suction power (in Pascals) that some of the newer models boast, but this machine is a strong all-rounder at under a grand. While just 8,000Pa, this suction was enough to pull up debris, hair and fluff in our tests, even on carpets, plus the mopping was exceptional, as per our Eufy X10 Pro Omni review.

This is an older robot vacuum cleaner, which explains why it's gotten such a massive discount – and it's no longer stocked by Dreame Australia. There's no harm in opting for a previous-gen robovac in this case though, because the L10S Ultra did very well in our tests. In our Dreame L10S Ultra review, marks were mostly docked because it was loud – everything else it did well. If you don't have carpets and pets, and want something simple, this is a fantastic price.

What the Dreame listed above lacks in suction power, this Eureka machine makes up for in spades. Of course, more performance means it costs a little more, but as it's half price right now it's considerably more affordable. With a zero-tangle brush, it can deal with human or pet hair, plus it promises to detect wet and dry spills – for the former, it will turn around and use the mop so as to avoid messing up its brushes. I don't know any other robovac that does this.

I've done the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni review myself and, if you have the money for it, it's one of the best robovacs you can get right now. While I found the Yiko voice assistant a little annoying, I couldn't complain about its overall performance. From cleaning the wall-to-wall carpet in my bedroom (that always has hair on it) to mopping kitchen stains, it did really well. And its edge cleaning is superb.

I had to list this one here despite its high price tag, even after a discount. I'm testing this machine right now and I'll have a full review soon, but if there's any robovac that combines good looks with top-notch performance, it's this one. In fact, it's cleaning better than the Deebot listed above, and the only reason I find it hard to make this my Editor's Choice is its price point.

One thing to remember with each of these robot vacuums is that there will be some ongoing costs to take into consideration.

The most common of these will be the dust bag that will need replacing every month or two, depending on which model you choose to buy, also on how often you vacuum and whether you have pets.

If you're opting for one of the cheaper models listed here, you'll also need to look into replacing the mop pads after six to eight months (again, depending on use), but the Deebot X8 Pro Omni and Aqua10 Ultra use rollers that should last you a lot longer.

Some robovacs can use detergents, but not all, so please check if the model you buy can take some soap. If so, it will generally need to be proprietary, as not all detergents will suit the mechanism inside the base stations and using the wrong type can void your warranty.
