By Anna SkinnerShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberNumerous food recalls were initiated nationwide this month due to undeclared allergens, potential Salmonella and Listeria contamination concerns, and possible cleaning agent contamination, among other reasons.
Newsweek reached out to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by email for comment.
Why It Matters
As millions of Americans are affected by severe food allergies, consuming recalled products with undeclared ingredients can be dangerous and even fatal at times. Bacterial contamination can also cause illness or even death. The FDA regularly posts nationwide recalls, and Americans are urged to check their recently purchased products to ensure they don't accidentally consume anything dangerous.

What People Are Saying
The FDA's webpage about the symptoms of Listeriosis: "Symptoms usually start within two weeks after eating food contaminated with Listeria but may start as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks after. Mild symptoms may include a fever, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness, vomiting, and diarrhea. If the more severe form of listeriosis develops, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions."
The FDA's webpage about undeclared food allergens: "Food allergies are a significant public health concern. Allergic reactions vary in severity from gastrointestinal disturbances and skin irritation, to anaphylaxis, shock and death. Consumers with allergies must avoid food containing allergenic materials to avoid these reactions. Because of this, consumers rely on food labels to disclose the presence of allergenic ingredients."
What Happens Next
Although many of the products have since been removed from store shelves, people should check to make sure they don't have any of the recalled items and dispose of them if necessary. In many cases, people are urged to contact the company or return the product to the store for a refund.
