After last week's bumper crop of new movies and TV shows, this week's selection is comparatively smaller.

Indeed, by my count, there are only 12 must-see films and TV series that have recently debuted on the world's best streaming services, so deciding what to include for this weekend's streaming recommendations list has been far easier. Here, then, are our top picks from this week's offerings. Enjoy! – Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter

The Mighty Nein season 1 (Prime Video)

The Mighty Nein - Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube The Mighty Nein - Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube Watch On

It's time to return to Exandria – but not to be reunited with the misfits who star in The Legend of Vox Machina. Instead, it's time for The Mighty Nein, aka the second Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) campaign from popular tabletop role-playing group Critical Role, to take the spotlight.

Set 20 years after the events of Vox Machina (FYI, its fourth season arrives in early 2026), Amazon's latest adult animated series will – like its forebear – adapt rather than recreate the plot of Critical Role's sophomore DnD campaign.

Following a new group of outcasts and mavericks, The Mighty Nein explores a new corner of Exandria, and will aim to enthral Prime Video users with its unique blend of high fantasy, gruesome action, crude humor, and trauma-led storytelling. One that fans of Vox Machina, Invincible, and Hazbin Hotel will lap up. – TP

Train Dreams (Netflix)

Train Dreams | Official Trailer | Netflix - YouTube Train Dreams | Official Trailer | Netflix - YouTube Watch On

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times: Train Dreams is my favorite Netflix movie of 2025.

Not only did I have zero expectations before watching it, but I never would have guessed that the fictional life of lumberjack Robert Grainier (Joel Edgerton) would have such a profound impact.

  • Jackson Lamb taking a phone call as he eats a meal in Slow Horses season 5 7 new movies and TV shows to watch on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and more this weekend (September 26)

Working on the rural railroads in the early 1900s, Robert's life is a cautionary tale of love, loss, and learning to live again. In more brief moments, Train Dreams challenges the socio-political landscape of the time, and it's something that weighs heavily on Robert as he gets older.

What's most astounding is how it subtly reframes traditional masculinity. Robert should be the ultimate man's man, with his appearance and job superficially defining him that way. But, when you see his vulnerability, emotion, and open heart around his wife and daughter, everything shifts. Read more in my Train Dreams review. – Jasmine Valentine, entertainment reporter

The Roses (Hulu)

THE ROSES | Official Trailer | Searchlight Pictures - YouTube THE ROSES | Official Trailer | Searchlight Pictures - YouTube Watch On

Cinematic excellence looks like Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch throwing insults, food, and furniture... or at least it is in my world. The Roses, which is out now on Hulu (NB: it'll be out on Disney+ outside of the US in early December) brilliant scratched the itch for silliness upon its initial theatrical release, and I can't wait to go back in for a second helping.

From Ivy's (Colman) seafood restaurant being named 'We've Got Crabs!' to Theo's (Cumberbatch) chaotic illustration of what it means to be a stay-at-home parent, the humorous details are perfectly finessed. But, that doesn't mean it's all a pantomime – at its core, there are some universally serious problems in their marriage that are faced head-on.

If nothing else, it's incredibly relatable, even if the movie tries and fails to pass off Devon in the UK as California. But, hey, believing in something that isn't there is what the magic of cinema is all about. – JV

After The Hunt (Prime Video)

After The Hunt | Official Trailer - YouTube After The Hunt | Official Trailer - YouTube Watch On

On paper, this new psychological thriller has all the makings of a surefire hit. With award-winning director Luca Guadagnino at the helm and an A-list cast including Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield, that's enough to convince a broad audience to watch one of the latest new Prime Video movies.

At its core, the film tackles a dark but compelling story about a student’s sexual assault accusation against a professor, exploring themes of consent and cancel culture. Despite its potential, After the Hunt fell flat with audiences, with many critics taking issue with its multi-perspective narrative.

From what I can gather, it attempts to explore themes of guilt and innocence by using conflicting viewpoints to shine a light on the complexities of such a heavy subject matter. But, for some, it's approach dilutes its message. – Amelia Schwanke, senior entertainment editor

The Family Plan 2 (Apple TV)

The Family Plan 2 — Official Trailer | Apple TV - YouTube The Family Plan 2 — Official Trailer | Apple TV - YouTube Watch On

Grab a mince pie and fire up that shiny new Apple TV subscription (especially if you snagged Prime Video’s bargain add-on in the Black Friday streaming deals). It’s time to properly get into the holiday spirit, because this new action flick is sliding down the streaming chimney and promises even more dumb fun than its predecessor.

The Family Plan 2 sees Mark Wahlberg reprise his role as Dan, a spy-turned-dad who just can’t quite shake off his assassin past. Now that the whole family knows about his violent history, it seems like a European vacation should be smooth sailing… until, of course, it isn’t. Enter a new threat, a mysterious client played by Kit Harington, who shakes up Dan’s world as he tries to enjoy a festive London and Paris.

Expect silly action and mindless fun – basically, everything you want in a festive action-comedy that’s entertaining for the whole family on Apple's streamer this weekend. – AS

A Man on the Inside season 2 (Netflix)

A Man on the Inside | Season 2 Official Trailer | Netflix - YouTube A Man on the Inside | Season 2 Official Trailer | Netflix - YouTube Watch On

I had a blast with season 1 of A Man on the Inside, so I’m very excited to dive into season 2. And, if you had any concerns it wouldn’t be as good as the first, A Man on the Inside season 2 already has a glowing 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Clearly, it's done something right, then!

Ted Danson is back as a Charles, a widower and retired college engineering professor turned private investigator. There's some great guest stars, too, including Danson's real life wife Mary Steenburgen, Constance Marie and David Strathairn. All episodes are now streaming if you want a bingeworthy, laugh out loud comedy to see you through the weekend. – LB
