According to multiple reports, the Steelers are releasing All-Pro cornerback Darius Slay. Slay and Pittsburgh have mutually agreed to part ways, and the expectation is that the Super Bowl champion will sign with another team.

The release comes at a very odd time, as the Steelers have fallen to 6-6, and are now tied for first with the Ravens in the AFC North. Getting rid of a veteran talent like Slay might come back to haunt them.

A major reason for Slay's release has to do with the Steelers promoting Asante Samuel Jr. to the active roster. Samuel will clearly be replacing Slay, who may have asked for his release due to losing his starting role.
Slay will now be free to sign with a new team, and it is believed that he will be looking to join a contender for the remainder of the regular season and through the playoffs.
Through 10 games in 2025, Slay has secured three passes defended and 26 total tackles. He has also posted a 75 percent completion percentage and 108.0 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks, while giving up one touchdown.
Slay may have had a dip in his ball hawk ways in 2025, but he is still a veteran cornerback who can bolster the secondary for most teams. He is likely to get plenty of attention from teams looking to compete in the playoffs.
Pittsburgh is currently giving up a fifth-worst 247.4 yards per game in the passing category, and Samuel might be the boost they need to correct this number.
