Back in the day, the best Black Friday deals were called "doorbusters" because people would literally bust the shop doors down to try and snap them up – and Best Buy has a doorbuster on the great Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones, taking them down to just $159.99.

This is not quite the lowest we've ever seen these headphones offered for, but it's the second-lowest and a Black Friday deal you can actually buy: the previous low price was only available for about a day and shows no signs of coming back.

We love these headphones, and they topped our best headphones guide long after their successors were introduced: they're so good that the more recent models have only offered incremental improvements.

When we tested these headphones at launch, we asked – are these the best headphones ever made? They deserved every one of the five stars we gave them in our Sony WH-1000XM4 review thanks to their stellar sound quality and class-leading noise cancellation – and they're still a really strong pick today at this very low price. They once dropped to just $129, but that was brief, and never repeated – this is the best price we've seen for them otherwise.

This is nearly the lowest price we've ever seen for these headphones; it's within £5 of the lowest ever price. These superb Sonys have typically been selling at around £199 in the UK, so an extra £21 off makes them even more tempting and around half the original asking price of £349. As we said in our review, these are exceptional headphones.

These headphones have been around for a while now, and it's testament to how good they are that we're still raving about them today. Age hasn't dulled their considerable charms, and they deliver sound quality, comfort and active noise cancellation that many more recent rivals don't meaningfully beat. And at around half the original list price you're getting incredible bang for your Black Friday bucks.

We like the sound of these Sonys: it's warm and balanced, and with large 40mm drivers there's plenty of low-end punch. In addition to hi-res streaming with LDAC they also have Sony's DSEE Extreme technology, which can upsample lower-quality audio to make it sound special. And in addition to special audio there's also spatial audio in the form of Sony's 360 Reality Audio.

One of the best things about these headphones is that you don't have to make a choice between effective ANC and impressive audio: the XM4s deliver both.

These headphones may have been superseded by the excellent XM6, but if you've been eyeing up the Sony WH-1000XM5 but didn't like their fairly high price tag – I've listed their original RRP, although they've been hovering just below $340 several times this year – then today is a good day to buy.
