Newsweek has contacted Mexico's government and the SDPD for comment via email outside office hours.
The Context
The incident began around 11 a.m. on Thursday in the East Village, San Diego neighbourhood, where police responded to a report of a stabbing at 715 15th Street, NBC 7 San Diego reported. Police deployed spike strips during the pursuit, but were unsuccessful in stopping the vehicle, per NBC 7 San Diego.
Following the stabbing, the suspect reportedly fled the scene in a gray Mercedes SUV and headed south through San Diego, eventually crossing the border into Mexico at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to the local channel.

SDPD told NBC 7 San Diego that the suspect crossed into Mexico, which ended the department’s pursuit. Once across the border, he was shot by Mexican law enforcement. The suspect was taken to a hospital, according to Lt. Travis Easter, though officials did not release additional information about his condition.
No SDPD officers were involved in the shooting, and police said the stabbing victim sustained life-threatening injuries, according to NBC 7 San Diego.
Shortly after 1 p.m., gunfire was reported near the El Chaparral inspection area in Tijuana, close to a commercial plaza., El Sol de Tijuana reported. The outlet reported that a vehicle coming from the United States was struck near the plaza.
Emergency responders were called to the outbound lanes of El Chaparral, where paramedics found a man with a gunshot wound, described as a roughly 35-year-old U.S. citizen, lying beside a gray Mercedes SUV with Mexican National Guard personnel nearby, according to El Imparcial.
National Guard personnel provided medical aid before paramedics arrived, stabilizing the man who was then taken to a hospital in serious condition, according to El Imparcial.
"Southbound traffic into Mexico via Interstate 5 South is experiencing significant delays due to an incident that occurred this afternoon and an ongoing investigation in Mexico. Travelers are advised to anticipate extended wait times or consider using alternative routes to alleviate congestion," a spokesperson for Customs and Border Protection told Newsweek.
