Flicking through the pages of Dazed is like watching a livestreamed time capsule of Björk’s ever-evolving style. The Icelandic icon has graced our cover a grand total of eight times – the most of any star in our 34-year history – and amassed a massive fashion archive in the process, working alongside the industry’s most innovative designers, photographers, stylists and more.

Today marks the singer’s 60th birthday, so to celebrate the milestone, we’re looking back through her editorial archive, which began in a surprisingly quiet fashion in 1995, looking a far cry from how we know her today. Shot by Rankin on location in New Hampshire, the singer was basking in the glory of her stratospheric second album, Post, but was photographed wearing her own casual clothes. By the time she returned for the May 2000 cover, the ante had been decidedly upped, with kaleidoscopic make-up, madly tousled hair and 90s icon David Sims behind the camera.

Next up was September 2004, and on the promotion cycle for his sixth album, Medúlla, Björk collaborated with four fashion innovators for her third Dazed cover. Shot by London-based photographer Laurence Passera, the musician enlisted designer Hussein Chalayan, make-up artist Peter Philips, designer and illustrator Julie Verhoeven and set designer Shona Heath to create illustrative montages of her photographs inspired by their crafts.

Speaking of designer collaborations, 2007’s October cover was a tribute to Björk’s creative relationship with German designer Bernhard Wilhelm, who crafted looks for her Volta tour, while the Winter 2019 issue featured Björk in head-to-toe Balmain, after Olivier Rousteing designed a wardrobe of looks for her Cornucopia tour. Elsewhere throughout the years, the singer has worn archival couture in her guest-edited 200th issue, Giles Deacon on the cover of our 20th anniversary issue in 2011, and also championed the work of up-and-coming fashion students in our Autumn 2017 issue.
