Jon Gruden to Giants Picks Up Steam With Latest Development

The New York Giants are searching for a new head coach after firing Brian Daboll following a Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears. Mike Kafka is currently serving in an interim role, but it seems unlikely he will be the head coach for 2026.

A plethora of names have already been connected to the Giants, and that includes Jon Gruden.

Gruden last coached in the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021, but resigned amid controversy with the league. The controversy is still ongoing, too, which is why many feel that New York will stay away from the Super Bowl-winning coach.

But apparently, Gruden himself is interested in the Giants job, as his brother, Jay Gruden, said as much during an appearance on The Arena.

“I think he’d be very interested [in the Giants’ head coaching job]. He loves Jaxson Dart,” Jay Gruden said. “If you want a guy to run RPOs and zone reads, he’s not your guy. If you want a guy to come in the building and challenge your quarterback every day, with personnel groupings, formations, snap counts, motions – a way to develop the quarterback the right way – then yeah, I’d be interested in having Jon come coach my team.”

Gruden's NFL coaching career began with the Raiders back in 1998, where he spent the first four seasons of his career before heading to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002. He won a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers during his debut campaign and spent seven years with Tampa Bay overall.

The 62-year-old was then out of a coaching job for a decade before returning to the Raiders in 2018. But after going 38-26 during his initial run with the Silver and Black, his second stint was not nearly as effective, with Gruden going just 22-31 without a single playoff appearance.

Overall, Gruden has gone 117-112 as an NFL head coach, making five trips to the playoffs throughout his career.

The general consensus has been that Gruden's next coaching stop will be on the collegiate level, specifically with an SEC team. But if the Giants come calling, it seems like Gruden would be very willing to listen.

New York is just 2-9 on the season, but with Dart at quarterback and some other good young players up and down the roster, there is definitely hope for the future for Big Blue. Particularly if they find the right coach.
