The New York Mets signed Kodai Senga before the 2023 season. His five-year, $75 million deal looked like a bargain when he was named an All-Star as a rookie, but now he is expected to be dealt.
ESPN's Jeff Passan recently revealed that Senga is "extremely available," and multiple executives expect him to be traded. Senga has been held back by injuries in the last two seasons. However, when healthy, he can be a great starter. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter predicted he would be traded to the Tampa Bay Rays this winter.
"The Rays won't be players on the top end of the free-agent market, but they are always looking for value, and buying low on Kodai Senga could pay dividends," wrote Reuter. "They have a surplus of outfielders, which the Mets need, so there could be some foundation for a deal to be made."
...Senga had a 2.98 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 29 starts as a rookie. However, he pitched in just one regular-season game the following year. He returned in the postseason, but did not look great. Last season, he was off to a sensational start. He had the best ERA in baseball through 13 starts. However, he suffered a hamstring injury and did not look sharp after returning.
He had a 1.47 ERA before the injury, but in his next 11 starts, he had a 4.73 ERA. He still has three years of club control. The Mets need help in the outfield and could target a player like Jake Mangum in return for Senga. The Mets drafted Mangum in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB draft but traded him to the Miami Marlins in 2022.
Mangum made his debut last season and posted a .296 batting average in 118 games. He had a solid rookie season and could help the Mets in an area of need. It's unclear what the Mets' asking price will be for Senga, but he is an interesting option on the market.
