Every team in the league will be looking to add depth this offseason, including the Boston Red Sox, who made an addition earlier this week.
The Red Sox took a step forward this season, making it to the postseason for the first time since 2021, and will look to build on that momentum with a strong offseason. Boston has been one of the teams linked to basically every high-profile free agent, with many believing that the Red Sox could end up signing a star player like Pete Alonso.
Though bringing in star power would be a good move for the Red Sox, the team made a move to improve their farm system, signing former St. Louis Cardinals hurler Osvaldo Berrios to a minor league contract, according to his transaction log.
...While Berrios is not the bona fide star player that fans want the Red Sox to sign, he is a good addition to their farm system. The 25-year-old hurler signed with the Worcester Red Sox after stints with the Oakland Athletics and Cardinals' farm systems.
Berrios performed well in Double-A this season, posting a 3.74 ERA across 28 appearances, including four starts, but struggled once he made his way to Triple-A. Berrios' ERA may have ballooned to a 9.20 in his 12 appearances after getting called up, but he still has had success in the minor leagues, especially since transitioning to a role primarily as a reliever.
The Red Sox have made it known that their priority this offseason is to add another top pitcher to pair with Garrett Crochet. While the signing of Berrios is not as impactful, the 25-year-old could end up having a role at some point next season out of the bullpen after likely starting the year down in Triple-A.
