By Cole SullivanShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe Kansas City Chiefs’ season has been full of inconsistencies, as they sit at 5-5 heading into Week 12’s matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
Despite the team’s struggles, it’s been a historic year for tight end Travis Kelce, who continues to cement his legacy as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history. Week after week, he continues to climb the record books, most recently becoming the all-time leader in total touchdowns in Chiefs franchise history, surpassing the legendary Priest Holmes in last week’s matchup against the Broncos.
For Kelce, the milestone wasn’t the focus after the game. He didn’t want to talk about it—but star quarterback Patrick Mahomes made sure to give him his flowers, even retrieving the football Kelce caught to break the record.
"He deserves it," Mahomes said after Week 11's loss. "The work he puts in every day... It speaks to the person he is to go out there and break that record... It came at a big moment in the game, and that's usually when he makes those plays."

On Friday, Kelce spoke about the moment and praised Mahomes’ awareness, calling it an example of great leadership and teammate behavior. Reflecting on his 13-year career and the many teammates he’s had, Kelce was clear: the best teammate he’s ever had is Patrick Mahomes.
"That's my guy," Kelce said. "He's been known to make sure guys get that memorabilia that could be personal to them down the road... His awareness is crazy... It's one of the reasons he's the best teammate I've ever had."

Travis Kelce was drafted by the Chiefs the same year Andy Reid took over as head coach in 2013. Patrick Mahomes wouldn’t join the team until 2017, so for several seasons, Kelce’s primary quarterback was veteran Alex Smith, who had a stellar NFL career.
Mahomes officially took the reins in 2018 after spending his rookie season as a backup. Since then, the Chiefs have reached the Super Bowl five times—winning three—claimed the AFC West every season, and established what’s arguably the closest thing to a modern NFL dynasty since Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and the New England Patriots.
