Illinois took the lead at the end of the first quarter last week and rolled to a 24-6 victory over visiting Maryland to get to 4-3 in Big Ten Conference play. Luke Altmyer threw for 172 yards with two touchdowns and an interception and picked up 62 yards on 11 carries, while Kaden Feagin ran for 81 yards and a score on 14 attempts, and Ca’Lil Valentine picked up 64 yards on 20 carries as the Illini rolled up 225 yards on the ground. Hudson Clement finished with three receptions for 72 yards and two TDs, and Matthew Bailey was in on 10 tackles, including eight solos.
Wisconsin fell to 1-6 in the Big Ten with its 31-7 loss at No. 2 Indiana last week, managing just 168 yards of total offense and turning the ball over twice. Carter Smith was 9-of-15 for 98 yards with a touchdown and an interception, with Lance Mason’s lone catch good for a 45-yard score in the second quarter. The defense had no answer for Indiana star Fernando Mendoza, who was 22-of-24 for 299 yards and four touchdowns despite getting sacked five times. Darryl Peterson logged 2.5 sacks.
The Badgers won the most recent meeting between the teams, 25-21 at Illinois on Oct. 21, 2023, and have won three of the last four encounters. Wisconsin leads the all-time series 45-39-7.
