Philadelphia Phillies star slugger Kyle Schwarber is likely headed for a huge new contract in free agency this offseason. Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently predicted Schwarber would sign a massive $160 million deal this winter.
Schwarber is coming off an MVP-level season for the Phillies. If it wasn't for Shohei Ohtani and his incredible two-way production, Schwarber would have brought home the National League MVP award. Now, he's set to sign a new deal in free agency.
Chris Landers of FanSided recently predicted Schwarber would re-sign with the Phillies in free agency this offseason, which would be a huge move in the right direction.
..."The Phillies are running out of runway to win a title with this current core, and it's awfully hard to imagine what the path forward will be if they don't retain Schwarber," Landers wrote. "Dave Dombrowski already more or less ruled out a major pitching addition, and Schwarber is an obvious fit in their lineup who also happens to be one of the leaders of this clubhouse. Schwarber's age and one-dimensional profile will keep his price in check, and Philly can't afford to lose this one."
The Phillies should be the favorites to sign Schwarber because of their close connection with him. But the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs are also seemingly in the hunt for the slugger.
It's hard to imagine one of these teams stealing Schwarber from the Phillies, though.
Philadelphia needs to add Schwarber and an outfielder to contend for the World Series next year. If the front office can pull this off, it'll be in a very good spot.
