Given the resume he's built since taking over as head coach of the Buffalo Bills back in 2017, it’s hard to fathom a scenario in which Sean McDermott is even on the hot seat.

But that’s exactly where one controversial analyst believes the 51-year-old coach is after the Bills dropped to 7-4 after their 23-19 “Thursday Night Football” loss to the Houston Texans in Week 12.

In his previous eight seasons, McDermott led the Bills to seven playoff appearances, five AFC East titles, two AFC Championship Game appearances, and an 86-45 record.

However, a small contingency of Bills fans are growing restless with the team’s knack for falling just short of reaching the Super Bowl — or even getting past the Kansas City Chiefs in the postseason, for that matter.

With 29-year-old quarterback Josh Allen still in his prime, some have begun wondering if McDermott is the guy to get him a championship.

Former ESPN and CBS host Jim Rome, who now hosts “The Jime Rome Show” on Westwood One, is among that group. Following Buffalo’s loss to Houston on Thursday, Rome made the case that McDermott is on the hot seat as the Bills sit as the No. 6 seed in the AFC after starting the season as Super Bowl favorites.

“Let’s face it, Sean McDermott is in trouble,” Rome stated. “He is — and if he’s not, he should be. Listen, he’s had a great run in Buffalo…except for those few brief moments that have completely defined his time in Buffalo where he and they have unraveled on the big stage.

“… He still has never proven he can get this team over the hump or win big games in January when they’re not supposed to — except they are supposed to win those games. His track record in Buffalo suggests that they’re never going to win a big game in January. His time leading the Bills makes you think they will always gag away a chance if given the chance.”

If the Bills did move on from McDermott, he likely wouldn’t be unemployed for long.

But given his track record of winning — he has a .655 win percentage with just one losing season in eight-and-a-half years — it would likely take something drastic like missing the playoffs for owner Terry Pegula to even consider making a change.
