The W is a London institution, synonymous with rock’n’roll (Picture: W Hotel)
Work hard, party harder: a cliché I lived by in my 20s.
The summer before the Olympics came to London, I found myself working the graveyard shift in hospitality. For a 22-year-old with little sleep and plenty of stamina, London was a pot of wild opportunities.
From making friends with crying girls at bus stops to spending a night at the glamorous W Hotel in Leicester Square, pretending I could party like a rockstar, the city had it all.
But gradually – then suddenly – the ‘party’ fell away. I was left with ‘work hard, harder’.
I don’t know how, and I don’t know why, but all these years later, I’ve been invited to review a ‘mystic’ astrology experience at the W, which is all about transforming and discovering your true self.
Rising from the ashes of my memory, I returned to a gut punch of rock’n’roll nostalgia, a healing soundbath, and the comfort my mid-30s body and mind both seek. I guess the stars aligned.

Saturn Returns
Timed to coincide with the Autumn Equinox – the day when the sun crosses the Earth’s equatorial plane, resulting in nearly equal amounts of daylight and darkness all over the world – the Saturn Returns stay is rooted in astrology, self-discovery, and wellbeing.
In other words, the trifecta of what some would call woo-woo.
The W partnered with reality star turned wellness guru Caggie Dunlop to launch this immersive in-room experience, which promises to help you sort out your ‘personal growth’.

This Saturn transit ‘feels more liberating than the ones before,’ or so I am told. ‘It reminds us of our free will and gives us the courage to implement it fully.’ Go on.
‘Controversial choices happen.’ Still reading. ‘It opens the ability to achieve the most difficult love act of all: self-love.’ Sold.
I think it’s time to dust off The Art of Loving.
Speaking of welcomes, a note on the staff: service, from the moment we arrived, exceeded five stars.

A room fit for a(n ageing) rockstar
The rooms at W London are clearly designed to bring out the egotistical rockstar that I’d like to think lives inside all of us.
Guests walk into a dressing room, surrounded by mirrors with a vanity desk in the centre. The lighting is unusually kind, and it’s a good place to snap selfies — though if you’re anything like me, you’ll give up after 15 minutes knowing there is no such thing as the perfect one.
The room is ideal for a glam session before hitting the bustling town below (I only wish I had this set-up at home), and the bed is more than comfortable enough for a night in (or to nurse a hangover).

While the decor screams party, the Saturn Returns Stay has been tweaked to instill a sense of calm.
Everything can be managed from the comfort of your bed through a tablet, whether you want to set up mood lighting or order room service.
Within arm’s reach of your pillow is a guide with affirmations, meditations and curated episodes from the Saturn Returns podcast to help you stay grounded.
Call me a Luddite, but all of that said, I didn’t love doing everything via iPad. I found adjusting the lighting a bit confusing… what’s wrong with the good old switch?

Sauna and steam bath
On the 6th floor is the AWAY Spa, an intimate corner with a gym, steam bath, and sauna (I swerved the first one).
Luxurious sofas where you sit between treatments are the perfect spot for self-reflection once the masseuse has worked out all your knots.
Each stay includes the Saturn Returns Treatment, a 90-minute session created with the aforementioned Seabody products, blending breathwork, aquatic sound healing, a hot oil body pour and herbal poultice massage, finished with a restorative sleep balm.
It’s as good as it sounds. It was a battle to leave the massage table once we were done.
Good grub and the largest disco ball in Europe
The Perception and the W Lounge serve a range of food and drink, so there’s no need to leave the hotel during your stay.
The W lounge has an Asian-fusion menu in a warm, welcoming setting; it’s also where breakfast is served.
If you are after a hedonistic evening, Perception has you covered with mood lighting, live DJs and the largest disco ball in Europe (who knew).
Staff and service were above five stars (Picture: Sofia Delgado)
The branding of the Saturn Returns stay extends into the social spaces. You’ll find the Saturn Sips range consisting of three bespoke non-alcoholic cocktails created with Everleaf.
And, if you find yourself bordering on comatose after the spa, you can order it all to your room, which is exactly what we did.
While my partner opted for the veggie burger, I tried the Korean spicy chicken bao buns, served with edamame. The cost of dinner came to £70, which isn’t far off some of the upscale options you’ll find on Deliveroo.

That said, if you’re willing to leave your cocoon, the hotel is surrounded by a wealth of outstanding dining options. You only have to walk a few steps to find authentic Asian dishes and the smorgasbord of eclectic flavours Soho has to offer.
Prime real estate
It really doesn’t get more central than this.
Bang in the middle of Leicester Square, you are within 15 minutes walking distance of Buckingham Palace, the National Portrait Gallery, Madam Tussaus, Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus and Covent Garden.
On your doorstep are the best shows The West End can offer, plus Chinatown and Soho for all your hedonistic needs.
Money talks
Location, location and luxury, experiences like this don’t come cheap.
