The Dallas Cowboys may not be mathematically eliminated from NFL playoff contention, but with a 4-5-1 record, they came into Sunday's game against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles facing a virtual must-win situation.
They were coming off a 33-16 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in which quarterback Dak Prescott had an outstanding performance with four touchdown passes and completed 25 of 33 pass attempts. But they didn't do much in that contest to convince anyone they were on the verge of turning things around.
On Sunday, Dallas gave up the first 21 points of the game. But even though Prescott wasn't on top of his game, he did manage to notch a massive accomplishment when he surpassed Tony Romo for the most passing yards in Cowboys history.

Considering the big names who have played under center for this storied franchise, including Hall of Famers Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, this is a major feather in the cap for Prescott, who is one of the more polarizing signal-callers in today's NFL.
While he is often considered by plenty of people to be one of football's elite quarterbacks, others claim he's overrated, especially because of his habit of underperforming in big games and in the playoffs. Still, he came into this week with pretty impressive numbers: 2,587 passing yards, 21 touchdown passes and a 69.9% pass completion rate, and he led everyone with 253 completed passes and a QBR of 74.9.
...Prescott has had trouble with ball security in the past, most notably when he led the NFL with 15 interceptions in 2022, despite missing five games that year due to a thumb injury. But coming into Sunday, he had six interceptions and a very respectable 1.7% interception rate.

One thing that has helped him put up strong numbers so far this season is the play of wide receiver George Pickens, whom Dallas acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pickens caught 58 passes for 908 yards and seven touchdowns coming into this weekend, and he leads the team in the former category.
In the third quarter on Sunday, he scored his eighth touchdown of 2025 to bring the Cowboys to within a touchdown of the defending world champs.
