Clinton Township police are investigating a shooting that occurred at MJR Partridge Creek Cinema on the 17000 block of Hall Road on Sunday evening while the outdoor mall was hosting its tree lighting event, according to CBS News Detroit.

Clinton Township is located approximately 20 miles north of Detroit, Michigan.

One person was shot in the abdomen and is currently in stable condition, 7 News Detroit confirmed. The suspect remains at large as of Sunday night, with police urging residents to lock their doors and windows.

Newsweek reached out to the Clinton Township Police Department via email on Sunday for comment.

Why It Matters

The incident disrupted a family-friendly community event designed to celebrate the holiday season, raising concerns about public safety at shopping centers during peak holiday periods.

The shooting occurred during a scheduled tree lighting ceremony that ran from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., according to the mall's website. The ongoing search for the suspect has prompted heightened security measures across the area.

At least eight teenagers were wounded, and one person was killed in two separate shootings in Chicago last week as the city celebrated the holiday season with a Christmas tree lighting Friday night.

What To Know

Authorities say the person of interest is described as a Black male wearing a green hooded sweatshirt with white flowers, jeans, tennis shoes. Police say he was last seen leaving the mall heading west. According to police, the incident appears to be isolated, not targeted at the tree lighting ceremony, and occurred between two groups.

Helicopter footage captured shortly before 9 p.m. showed several police vehicles parked outside the mall and police tape surrounding at least two vehicles in a parking lot, CBS News Detroit reported.

The severity of the victim's injuries was not immediately known at the time of initial reports, though Clinton Township police later confirmed the victim was in stable condition.

Clinton Township police continue their investigation and search for the suspect.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact local law enforcement.
