Roblox CEO David Baszucki has responded to accusations that the gaming platform is being used by predators to contact young children in a bizarre interview.

At least three separate lawsuits have been filed against The Roblox Corporation this year over “concerns” about child safety on the popular gaming platform. Most recently, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton confirmed he was taking legal action against Roblox for “flagrantly ignoring” safety laws and “deceiving parents” about the dangers the online platform poses.

“I’m suing Roblox for putting pixel pedophiles and profits over the safety of Texas children,” he wrote on X. “We cannot allow platforms like Roblox to continue operating as digital playgrounds for predators where the well-being of our kids is sacrificed on the altar of corporate greed.”

Responding to the allegations, Roblox told the BBC that it is “disappointed” it is being sued based on “misrepresentations and sensationalised claims”. However it has confirmed that in the near future, all users will need to verify their age before they can chat with other gamers.

Following the announcement, Baszucki sat down with The New York Times for what they described as a “tense” interview.

At one point, Baszucki was asked “how do you think of the problem of predators on Roblox?” to which he replied: “We think of it not necessarily just as a problem, but an opportunity as well.“ He went on to deny that Roblox was somewhere “predators go to find kids” even though “what you might read in the news would portray it that way.”

The New York Times then asked him if he thought Roblox has a problem with predators. “I think we’re doing an incredible job at innovating relative to the number of people on our platform and the hours, in really leaning into the future of how this is going to work,” Baszucki replied.

He then spoke over the podcast hosts, complained they weren’t talking about “fun” things and accused them of conducting a “stealth interview”.

“This week’s Hard Fork might be the craziest interview we’ve ever done,” said The New York Times’ Kevin Roose on social media. “We asked the CEO of Roblox about the child safety issues that have been plaguing the platform. His response was…well, just listen.”

“To be clear, Roblox pitched *us* on interviewing their CEO about child safety. We don’t ambush people. But he seemed totally caught off-guard by the questions, and got angrier the more we asked,” he added.

Baszucki replied to the tweets, saying he was “always happy to talk about our commitment to safety and other fun and industry-leading stuff that Roblox is working on.”

“Dude, this interview makes you sound like such a fucking idiot,” wrote one fan. “What a genuinely awful interview from Roblox. The guy doesn’t give 2 shits about child safety AND says that bringing gambling to CHILDREN is a ‘brilliant idea’,” said another. “This interview is painful. Online safety for kids is a Tier 1 tech issue right now and the CEO of a large gaming platform has no answers for how to improve it, and barely seems to take it seriously,” added a third.

Earlier this year, Baszucki said that if parents were worried about their children’s safety on Roblox, they shouldn’t let them access it. “That sounds a little counter-intuitive, but I would always trust parents to make their own decisions.” As part of their efforts to make the platform safer, Roblox reportedly forced all users with ‘69’ in their name to rebrand or face a permanent ban.
