By Trevor SquireShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe Kansas City Chiefs may have salvaged their playoff hopes with an overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 12, but one game isn't enough for Patrick Mahomes to change the minds of NFL power brokers.
Currently 6-5 on the season, the Chiefs are far from favorites to come out of the AFC and make a fourth consecutive Super Bowl appearance.
Meanwhile, Mahomes is outside the conversation for the league's most prestigious awards.
Through October, Mahomes was the favorite to win this season's NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. However, November saw Mahomes' odds drop significantly as the Chiefs lost two of their past three games. Mahomes was made mortal, throwing just one touchdown to three interceptions in that span, which has led oddsmakers to tank his odds to +2500, christening the MVP chase as a two-man race.
...“Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has taken the mantle as the clear-cut MVP favorite after another dominant showing in Week 12 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football,” SI.com writer Peter Dewey wrote.
“Only Stafford (-210) and New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye (+180) have shorter than 16/1 odds to win the award, a sign that oddsmakers view this as a two-player race through the first 12 weeks of the 2025 season.”

While Mahomes is a long shot to win his third MVP, Dewey finds his current odds to be of value considering Mahomes' pedigree.
“While the Chiefs’ record likely would disqualify Mahomes from an MVP conversation, he’s still put up impressive numbers for a player down at +2500 to win the award. Mahomes has 2,977 passing yards, 18 scores and just seven picks this season while also rushing for 318 yards and an additional four scores,” Dewey added.

Mahomes has a chance to improve his standing in the MVP race and help Kansas City assert itself in the playoff chase on Thanksgiving when they face the Dallas Cowboys (5-5-1).
