Lakanwal, 29, is an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021, according to reports from CBS News and CNN.

The incident highlights ongoing security concerns in the nation's capital, especially amid the heightened National Guard deployment following President Trump order earlier this year.

On November 26, two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot near 17th and I Streets NW, in proximity to the White House, according to law enforcement and federal officials.

The shooting triggered immediate lockdowns at the White House, the Main Treasury, and Freedman's Bank Building.

The White House was placed on a "condition red" security status before being downgraded to "condition orange" as the situation stabilized.

Lakanwal was shot, taken into custody, and is being treated for injuries, according to officials quoted by the Associated Press

The identities of the Guardsmen have not been released. Both were transported to area hospitals, where they were described as being in critical condition by FBI Director Kash Patel.

The incident resulted in a temporary halt to flights at Reagan National Airport while emergency air traffic operations, including a medevac helicopter, were conducted near the White House.
