By Cole SullivanShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe Kansas City Chiefs were coming off a massive win last week over the Indianapolis Colts, which appeared to be a key turning point as they improved to 6-5 heading into Thursday’s Thanksgiving clash against the Dallas Cowboys.
However, despite remaining competitive throughout the contest, the Chiefs fell to Dallas 31-28, dropping back to .500 at 6-6 and remaining outside the AFC playoff picture. The loss led to a painfully honest admission from star quarterback Patrick Mahomes about where Kansas City currently stands.
“Our ceiling is playing in the Super Bowl,” Mahomes said. “We got all the same guys, we’ve added players, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to go out and do it on every single week on a week-in, week-out basis. We can beat anybody, but we’ve shown that we can lose to anybody, and so we’ve got to be more consistent. It starts with me being consistent throughout the entire game, not in just big moments. And that’s something that we have to do throughout an entire game. And week to week, it’s not just one time. And we obviously see the last week we have a big win, and then you come here and playing our good football team, and you don’t, you don’t come to play. And so the ceiling can be what it is, but until you put it on the football field, you won’t be able to go out there and win football games.”

Mahomes played a stellar game, completing 23 of 34 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns while adding 30 rushing yards on three attempts. But that’s been the story of the Chiefs’ season — Mahomes delivers, yet the two sides of the ball rarely click at the same time. When the offense finds a rhythm, the defense struggles to get stops; when the defense shows up, the offense can’t move the ball consistently.
Now, Kansas City finds itself in unfamiliar territory. They’re well out of the AFC West race, trailing both the Los Angeles Chargers and the Denver Broncos, and would need a near-miracle to climb back and overtake Denver for the top spot.
If things hold, the Chiefs’ streak of nine straight division titles will come to an end. And if they miss the playoffs entirely, it would mark the first time in the Mahomes era that Kansas City fails to reach the postseason — a stunning possibility given they were just in the Super Bowl last year with a roster that, on paper, only improved.
