By Andrew StantonShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberDozens of Democrats voted to condemn socialism on Friday ahead of the meeting between President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
Why It Matters
Mamdani became one of the most prominent democratic socialists in the country after his victory in the New York City mayoral race earlier this month, a landmark victory for the political left. But his ascent has divided Democrats amid concerns that Republicans could tie those in more competitive districts or states to socialism ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Mamdani Is a Democratic Socialist. What Does That Mean?
Mamdani is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Democratic socialists believe that capitalism is a “system designed by the owning class to exploit the rest of us for their own profit” and must be replaced by democratic socialism, according to the organization’s website.
...“We want a democracy that creates space for us all to flourish not just survive and answers the fundamental questions of our lives with the input of all. We want to collectively own the key economic drivers that dominate our lives, such as energy production and transportation. We want the multiracial working class united in solidarity instead of divided by fear,” the organization’s website reads.
It states policy goals including single-payer health care, “defunding the police/refunding communities,” and the Green New Deal.
What Time Are Mamdani and Trump Expected to Meet?
The meeting between Mamdani and Trump is set for 3 p.m. ET on November 21.
Mamdani and Trump have been political rivals. Mamdani cast himself as the strongest candidate who would stand up to Trump’s policies on the campaign trail. He has been critical of the administration’s approach to immigration, saying he wants the New York Police Department (NYPD) not to assist with immigration operations in the city.
Trump, meanwhile, has attacked Mamdani, referring to him as a “communist lunatic” and has questioned whether he is in the country legally. Mamdani is a naturalized U.S. citizen.
What People Are Saying
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, on Thursday: “I intend to make it clear to President Trump that I will work with him on any agenda that benefits New Yorkers. If any agenda hurts New Yorkers, I will also be the first to say so.”
President Donald Trump wrote Wednesday on Truth Social: “Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran 'Kwame' Mamdani, has asked for a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st. Further details to follow!”
What Happens Next
The meeting is set for this afternoon. Details of the meeting could be made public soon after.
