Snow is forecasted to hit certain parts of the United States over the Thanksgiving holiday period—which historically runs from Monday, November 24, through to Thursday, November 27—according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, which produces long-range weather forecasts for specific regions in America.

Why It Matters

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel periods in the United States. This year, the AAA is projecting that over 82 million people will travel over Thanksgiving, so this anticipated snowfall could impact safety, disrupt travel plans, and potentially affect planned holiday gatherings. Knowing where snow is forecast is crucial for families and travelers planning cross-country journeys or local get-togethers.

What To Know

...

According to long-range forecasts from The Old Farmer's Almanac , snow is likely to affect the following states over Thanksgiving:

Northeast and New England

Areas in the northern parts of New England, particularly New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Washington D.C., could see unsettled periods of weather in the run-up to Thanksgiving, which includes light snow. But forecasters are predicting that this will “hopefully” clear by Thursday, 27.

Great Lakes, Ohio Valley & Midwest

Regions including Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, and Wisconsin are forecast to experience light snow flurries, especially across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, but this should turn to “fair skies” in time for Thanksgiving Day.

North and South Central (Plains and Rockies)

North central parts of the nation, including Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, could get flaky snow, and south central areas, including Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, could see unsettled weather and light snow, especially across the Plains and in the Rocky Mountains.

Southwest

Light snow is expected in Nevada, Utah, and parts of Arizona, but although conditions should fair up, it is likely to remain cold.

What People Are Saying

Carol Connare, editor of The Old Farmer's Almanac, previously told Newsweek: “We predict about the same amount of weather-related disruptions as last year, though in different areas. Snow may disrupt travel in a few northern areas.”

Chad Merrill, AccuWeather senior meteorologist, also previously told Newsweek: "We are looking at a pretty strong cold front coming through the western and central part of the United States Thanksgiving week, and when that comes through, it's going to produce a bit of snow."

What Happens Next

The Old Farmer’s Almanac and meteorologists emphasize that their forecasts are not substitutes for local, up-to-the-minute weather updates. With the timing and intensity of winter storms subject to change, officials are urging all Thanksgiving travelers to check local weather advisories, monitor National Weather Service alerts, and allow extra travel time before setting off.
