By Ellie CookShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberPresident Donald Trump has accused Ukraine of having "zero gratitude" over the U.S. attempts to end nearly four years of full-scale war in the country, shortly after the Republican gave Kyiv until Thursday to consent to a new 28-point proposal.
"UKRAINE 'LEADERSHIP' HAS EXPRESSED ZERO GRATITUDE FOR OUR EFFORTS, AND EUROPE CONTINUES TO BUY OIL FROM RUSSIA," Trump wrote in a post to his Truth Social platform on Sunday.
Earlier this week, it emerged the Trump administration had been working with Russia to formulate a new peace plan to bring the conflict to a close. Months of largely U.S.-brokered negotiations had failed to yield concrete progress, although Ukraine did sign up to a U.S. proposal back in March.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022, and currently controls roughly a fifth of Ukraine. The firm conditions laid out by Moscow and Kyiv for a peace deal have long appeared irreconcilable.
The 28-point plan received a lukewarm reception in Ukraine and among European officials, who have been concerned the U.S. administration's negotiations with Russia and Ukraine would not prioritize European security and shortchange Kyiv.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video statement on Friday that the country faced losing U.S. support over the plan, but insisted he would not "betray" Ukraine. Zelensky said Kyiv was staring down one of the "most difficult moments in our history."
Ukraine still relies on U.S. military support to keep battling Russian forces, including through intelligence-sharing, although it has developed many of its own independent capabilities since the start of the war.
This is a breaking story and will be updated shortly.
