In a fight no one saw coming, the Church of Satan is calling out The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Lisa Barlow for being a “clout chaser” and trying to use the church to sell Vida Tequila after a comment she made on a recent episode.

Why It Matters

On an episode of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Barlow said that she donated Vida Tequila, her alcohol brand, to the Church of Satan. Her comment came during a confessional interview after the women visited castmate Mary Cosby’s church.

However, the Church of Satan hit back on Twitter, saying it had never received donations from Barlow and told Newsweek it wouldn’t accept the tequila donation if she offered it.

Newsweek reached out to Barlow via email for comment.

What To Know

David Harris, an ordained magister and media representative for the Church of Satan, told Newsweek that the church is “never surprised when clout chasers drop our name for attention, especially when they’re lying about it.” Harris confirmed the church has never asked for donations in the form of tequila or otherwise.

Harris said that Barlow’s tequila “can’t possibly be any good” if she’s “name dropping the Church of Satan for mainstream attention.”

...

During the latest episode of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, the women attend a service at Cosby’s church, and Barlow, who is Mormon, said she went for Cosby and to “maybe have a little connection with God and Jesus.” Cosby took over as first lady of the Faith Temple Pentecostal Church in 1998 after marrying her step-grandfather following the death of her grandmother.

In an interview after the service, Barlow said that churches share the similarity that going to a service can “fill a void,” and she believes you can find “joy” in any religion—"except the Church of Satan.”

Harris pushed back on Barlow’s comment, saying it stems from a “lack of understanding of what Satanism is.”

He argued that it’s a “this life is the only life there is, and that one should live it to the absolute fullest.”

What They’re Saying

Lisa Barlow said on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City: “We still do make donations to [The Church of Satan] too...If they ask for tequila, we're like ‘sure, we don’t discriminate.’”

Church of Satan media representative David Harris told Newsweek: “There is no heaven, there is no hell. There is no god or devil. This life is all that there is. Satanists thus find a great deal of joy in their journey towards self-fulfillment.”

What Happens Next

Barlow hasn’t commented further on the claim that she donated tequila to the Church of Satan.
